Jedi Mindset: Discussing Effective Learning Strategies with Students

Abstract Students' ability to retrieve acquired knowledge long-term is critical for every discipline, especially Immunology. The research on learning shows undergraduate students use ineffective strategies, misjudging passive vs active ways of learning. Moreover, first generation graduates may be at a disadvantage as they have less opportunity learn from family member experience. Sixty percent who attend medical, dental or graduate school continue e.g., re-reading. Our goal was develop bookclub our incoming discuss effective and assess student’s willingness switch more strategies well evaluate the benefit bookclub. We held three consecutive weekly sessions before courses started book by Dr. Saundra McGuire entitled, “Teach yourself how learn”. Incoming read few chapters each session answered questions about their reading. A discussion facilitated with senior students, shared experience program provided advice. Short podcasts UCLA Lasting Learning website were viewed revisit important points. Students recognized that re-reading not willing modify study habits continued following semester. In addition, agreed beneficial tools help them succeed in coursework, emphasized positive impact students’ participation. suggested can reach full potential.
